El Salvador: His Daughter Graduates. He Faces Deportation.

The New York Times has a short video (~11 minutes) about some of the complicated issues related to the Trump administration's increased enforcement of immigration law. Under President Obama, the US sought to prioritize repeat offenders and criminals for deportation. That wasn't always the case under Obama as people who didn't fit those two categories were also deported from the US. Under President Trump, however, every undocumented immigrant is a priority, which in effect means no one is a priority.

There are so many reasons not to deport the roughly 11-12 million people in the US without authorization. Compassion. Economics. Security. Family. History. Self-interest. While we should approach each individual case with compassion, it's not that you simply provide blanket protections to everyone. Congress needs to develop a path to lawful permanent residency and citizenship for those who meet certain agreed upon qualifications.
