Jimmy Morales, not an ally

In a rather stunning public statement, Guatemala's Public Prosecutor Thelma Aldana said that President Jimmy Morales "is not an ally" in the fight against corruption.
"I don't see the president of the republic as an ally in the fight against corruption," prosecutor Thelma Aldana told reporters.
Her comment came a day after Morales, in a new year's address to the nation, stressed that transparency was one of his priorities in office.
"It seems to me that his speech went beyond the reality," Aldana said.
Aldana's not wrong. Morales' campaign, political party, and family have been tainted by corruption. Oh yeah, he has too. They were just strong words delivered at a moment where Guatemala's corrupt political class is once again on the offensive.
