New laws take effect with, without governor's signature
Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon faced a Tuesday deadline to act on legislation passed this year.
Nixon signed bills including a measure to require legal challenges to ballot measures to be resolved eight weeks before an election, instead of the current six weeks.
Another measure will require that some school sexual education courses provide information on sexting and sexual predators.
Nixon will allow one bill to take effect without his signature. The measure directs the Department of Revenue to stop awarding contracts for license fee offices based in part on whether a business or nonprofit promises to give some of the profits back to the state. New Missouri measures will limit when court challenges to ballot measures must be decided and add guidelines for some school sexual education classes.
