Perez Molina loses another battle
On Friday, a congressional committee recommended that President Otto Perez Molina's immunity from prosecution be removed so that authorities can investigate his connections with recent corruption scandals in Guatemala and face prosecution if necessary. A vote by the entire congress is scheduled for next week. Two-thirds will need to vote to remove Perez's immunity matters to move forward. (An end to impunity in Guatemala?)
Pretty remarkable, no?
We'll have to see how many people turn out for today's demonstrations in the capital. Organizers were calling for another massive protest for today. Congressional decisions do not always respond to the law so I imagine that their vote will be affected by the magnitude of Saturday's protest.
Today's will be the first nighttime protest.
