As I mentioned earlier today, there been some confusion with the murder rate in Guatemala caused by a recent Prensa Libre report. They combined a number of statistics in a way that did not make sense at all. Fortunately, Carlos Mendoza has retrieved the homicide statistics from the PNC and violent death statistics from Inacif.
Remarkably, Guatemala's murder rate dropped below 30 last year (maybe, it's really an estimate). I know. We should probably round to 30, but 29.5 sounds so much better. When El Salvador's rate is over 100 and Honduras' near 60, 29.5 should be something to celebrate. Look out Costa Rica.
For all that's gone wrong with the country these last few years, the people of Guatemala have been able to push through and nearly keep par with everybody's poster child for success, Colombia (25).
