Diplomat murdered in El Salvador

Romania's diplomatic representative in El Salvador, Ricardo Emanuel Salume Barake, was killed in an apparent homicide on Sunday. His body was found bound and gagged at his home in Escalon.

According to Howard Cotto, one strong hypothesis for the murder is robbery. There were no signs of forced entry and the videos from security cameras were missing. People at the crime scene speculated that Salume Barake was a "money lender" which might have led to his death.

Salume Barake is the second diplomat killed in El Salvador this year. Panama's honorary consul, Carlos Armado Lemus, was murdered in May.

Salume Barake's death comes following a sharp drop in murders these last three months, possibly a result of a truce among gangs or better policing (leaning towards the former).

Unfortunately, July has not been as kind to the people of El Salvador.
