Who are the US' undocumented immigrants?
NPR brought together a number of interesting facts on undocumented immigration in How America's Idea Of Illegal Immigration Doesn't Always Match Reality.
- An estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the US.
- Mexicans make up the majority of undocumented immigrants, but their absolute numbers have been declining in recent years.
- Most undocumented immigrants have lived in the US for many years (66% have lived in the US for 10 or more years).
- We don't exactly know how many people overstay their visas and then become undocumented immigrants. It could be as high as half the undocumented population in the country today and there is some evidence that such people make up a growing percentage of those who become undocumented each year. And Canadians probably lead the way.
- "61 percent of unauthorized immigrants live in 20 metro areas — but most live in the suburbs, not the city" (this I did not know).
- Most working undocumented immigrants are in the service and construction industry (this I probably would have guessed right).
- Approximately one-third of all unauthorized immigrants live with at least one child who is a U.S. citizen.
While I might note that the undocumented population has decreased from 13 to 11 million over the last decade, there are some who clearly want that number at zero.
Given that most undocumented people have lived in the US for over a decade and one-third have at least one child who is a US citizens, I would encourage a more compassionate policy. Theses are members of our communities, Churches, schools, etc.
Given that perhaps half of those who are in the US without proper documentation originally entered the country via legal means, I might say that spending so much on building a wall (while taking away money from the Coast Guard and other areas?) doesn't make sense at all. I imagine however that the new administration is going to limit those who can enter our country on visas. It's not necessarily an either / or scenario. The Trump administration is going to try to limit undocumented and legal immigration, damn the consequences for our economy and standing in the world.
Most should be common knowledge by now but if you get your news from President Trump, this will mostly be new to you.
