Another day in Guatemala: CICIG working alongside those it is investigating

I spoke with Parker Asmann of Insight Crime yesterday for his article "In Huge Momentum Shift, Guatemala President Retains Immunity." There was a bit of thinking out loud on my part during our conversation. Basically, I originally thought that Congress might have used the investigation into President Morales to distract investigators from their own transgressions. However, Nomada and Plaza Publica's reporting last week demonstrated that Congress was unlikely to strip Morales of his immunity.

They had learned from the 2015 removals and arrests of OPM and Baldetti that sacrificing bigger fish was unlikely to protect them from prosecution. CICIG and the MP's office have continued to pursue charges against other members of the administration, congress, government more broadly, and the private sector.

Jimmy Morales' attempt to discredit and remove Commissioner Ivan Velasquez, de-legitimizing the work of CICIG in its entirety, demonstrates the lengths to which he and those who benefit from a corrupt system are now ready to defend their privilege. Read the rest here.
