Morales' removal is not going to be enough

Prensa Libre: Whitmer Barrera
President Jimmy Morales and Congress have pitted themselves against the Guatemalan people and international community. Protesters are now calling for the president's resignation, campaign finance reforms, and the removal of congressmen who voted to protect themselves and their allies from corruption charges (Albadalejo).

Following Otto Perez Molina's resignation and arrest in 2015, many Guatemalans pleaded for elections to be postponed so that campaign finance reforms could be passed and allegedly corrupt candidates could be investigated and barred from competing. Instead, the election went ahead as scheduled. And here we are. Morales' removal is not going to be enough.

Take a read through Angelika Albadalejo (InSight Crime), Claudia Escobar (former magistrate of Guatemala's Court of Appeals), and Luis Barrueto (a journalist and political analyst from Guatemala) for some ideas as to where Guatemala needs to go from here.
