Depending on the breed, lost or stolen dogs can go for $50 to $1,000 on Craigslist. The Better Business Bureau of Southwest Missouri says crooks are turning a profit on lost animals instead of turning them in.
If your pet suddenly disappears, check online to see if someone is trying to sell it. If you're looking to buy an animal, the BBB warns there is little to no regulation on such internet sales. "You just need to be very careful when buying any kind of dog on Craigslist. One thing you can do, is check to see if there are any pictures with the pet's owners. Also, go and visit them in person and see how they react around the so-called owners," suggests T.J. Loudis of the Better Business Bureau of Southwest Missouri.
The BBB says your best bet is to buy through the Humane Society an animal rescue or from a legitimate breeder. If you do find the perfect pet online, be sure to get the animal's paperwork. Also, don't buy it unless the seller agrees to a vet's examination. That way, you'll find out if the dog has any health problems or if it has a microchip. Finally, always get your pet micro-chipped. If someone finds it, it's an easy way to prove you're the rightful owner.
