Man arrested in murder of Sedalia Teenager
Brian J. Young, 34, was arrested Monday afternoon after he turned himself into police. Sedalia Police Department Cmdr. Adam Hendricks said they are seeking charges of second degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. Young was named as a suspect in the Ivestigation into 16-year-old Andrew Meyers’ death after witnesses came forward with information.
“Witnesses had come forward and we were able to get names of people who were involved in the vehicle,” Hendricks said. “There was more than one person in the vehicle than just Brian. That led us to Brian — people knowing of it and calling and giving us tips.”
Hendricks said it appears Young shot Meyers in a “drug deal gone bad.” Young made contact with Meyers through an unknown subject to buy marijuana. When Young arrived at the residence in the 400 block of North Missouri Avenue, Meyers and other unknown subjects attempted to rob him at gunpoint. At that time, Young drew his own weapon, shot Meyers once in the side near his armpit and ran out of the residence.
So far the other subjects with Meyers have not been identified, but Hendricks said officers and detectives are following several leads to determine who else was involved other than Meyers.
According to a SPD release, at 10:03 p.m. Friday, SPD received several 911 calls of a subject who had been shot near West Cooper Street and North Missouri Avenue.
Upon arrival Friday night, officers found a black male subject, who had sustained a gunshot wound, lying near a car. Officers applied first aid until Pettis County Ambulance District units arrived and transported the subject to Bothwell Regional Health Center. Meyers underwent examination and treatment, but later died while at the hospital.
An investigation and search warrant at the residence where Meyers had been when he was shot revealed a “significant number” of narcotic trafficking items along with “numerous” illegal firearms. Hendricks said Monday it was determined the seized firearms were used in the attempted robbery against Young.
