Another Salvadoran president under investigation for corruption

Former Salvadoran President Tony Saca has been under investigation for quite some time but it is now official. On Monday, the Supreme Court ordered an investigation into allegations of illicit enrichment. Saca and his wife's bank and stock accounts were frozen and properties seized. Saca has been unable to explain the origins of several million dollars in assets that he accumulated while president between 2004 and 2009.

Unfortunately, some of my FMLN friends used to defend the party and Mauricio Funes by arguing that they were doing nothing different than what ARENA had done in government. I argued somewhat the same thing when the FMLN sought to appoint two sets of Supreme Court justices during a single legislative period. However, following ARENA's corruption footsteps is not exactly what we had in mind.

A more aggressive court, a citizenry fed up with corruption, greater international pressure, and a political system that needs to prove that it does not need a MACCIH let alone a CICIG are doing some good.
