Volcan de Fuego erupted yesterday in Guatemala, killing at least 25.
Guatemala, and Central America overall, suffers its fair share of natural disasters. Combined with high rates of poverty, especially in rural and relatively isolated areas of the country, environmental degradation, poor infrastructure, the serious absence of zoning regulations and enforcement, and corruption, a volcanic eruption is a recipe for disaster. Disasters also have a tendency to bring out the best and worst of government.
I'm not sure it's accurate, but the US is missing among this list of countries that sent condolences or offered assistance (Mexico, Israel, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador). It did send a warning out to US citizens, however.
The United States should grant TPS for Guatemala.
