Chase Through Lake Area Ends In Shootout On Highway 54; Both Suspects Injured

Authorities block the road on Highway 54, as a pursuit of two individuals across central Missouri ended with a shootout in Hickory County.

HICKORY COUNTY, Mo. — A chase through central Missouri ended with a shootout along Highway 54, on Thursday evening.

According to the Camden County Sheriff’s Department, on Thursday afternoon deputies assisted in pursuit of a vehicle that had been stolen from the Millersburg area, near I-70, east of Columbia. ABC 17 news reported the incident began with a shooting at a Millersburg autobody shop. One person was reportedly shot there, and the suspects allegedly stole a vehicle and fled.

The pursuit at the Lake picked up in the Lake Ozark area and continued west through Osage Beach where the suspect vehicle was partially disabled with stop-sticks. Authorities say the suspects then fled again, continuing west through Linn Creek, Camdenton, and Macks Creek. The chase ultimately ended in Hickory County where the sheriff’s department says at least one of the occupants of the vehicle fired several shots from a firearm at an occupied civilian vehicle parked on the side of the road. No one in that vehicle was hurt, but in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, the vehicle was wrecked into a ditch, and both suspects were injured. No officers were hurt, and both suspects were taken into custody and taken to local hospitals to be treated.

Law enforcement officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Camden County Sheriff’s Department, Osage Beach Police, Linn Creek Police and Camdenton Police were involved in the pursuit in the Lake area. The highway patrol is investigating the incident and will be pursuing charges. The Missouri Department of Transportation said Highway 54 from Route 65 in Hickory County to Route 73 in Camden County was closed as a result of the shootout, and will be closed for 8–10 hours, as the investigation continues and crews clean up the scene.
